Song Backer is a crowdfunding platform dedicated to the YouTube cover video. Fans can back musicians and request songs, with the goal of funding the production of a music video featuring those requests. When the pledge threshold is reached, the artist is paid immediately through PayPal, after Song Backer takes a 15% cut. The site has some cool features to track artist reliability, provide user feedback, and backer info. It’s quite well-developed for launching very close to the time of this review. We’re impressed with the concept and the execution. The community of musicians has a long ways to grow, but we think with such an attractive and low-risk offering — combined with the popularity of YouTube cover videos — lots of musicians will get on board. The lynchpin of the platform is that they handle the cover song licensing for you once your campaign becomes successful. It’s quite the added value for an independent musician — instead of having your video booted on a copyright claim, it will be cleared and you can monetize the stream. This crowdfunding/licensing hybrid model frankly excites us, and we can’t wait to see the community grow.
